What to Do If Your Medium Articles Aren’t Getting Views

What to Do If Your Medium Articles Aren’t Getting Views

You publish your article, and a day later, next to no one has viewed it. Every Medium writer knows this pain, from the greenest newbie to the most seasoned veteran. Every writer has articles that bomb.

What to do when this happens?

Step #1: Find Out If There Is a Reason

Sometimes an article bombs because something is wrong with it. Maybe it has a bad headline, a bad feature photo, no tags, is formatted weirdly, or is poorly written. If an article is seriously bombing, the first thing you want to do is figure out if anything is wrong with it.

The sooner, the better. If your article was released in the last 24 hours and you fix whatever’s broken with your article, you might be able to salvage its performance.

You can check and make sure the headline isn’t what’s wrong by using CoSchedule’s Headline Analyzer. Sign up for the free analysis plan and analyze your headline. If it scores below a 70, your headline is (part of) what’s wrong with your story.

You can tell if your feature photo is what’s wrong depending on its quality. If it’s an author’s original photo, it can look however you want. But if it’s a stock photo, it better be a high-resolution gorgeous stock photo. Or a high-resolution stock photo of gorgeous people. Anything less gets ignored by readers.

Formatting is also crucial. If your story isn’t formatted well — if paragraphs are too long or too short, if too little or too much text styling is used — readers will click away quickly. Medium won’t send any more after that.

Step #2: If There Is No Reason, Write Another Article

Often, there is no clear reason behind why an article isn’t doing well. Sometimes articles we think are guaranteed wins are total duds. Sometimes the opposite happens. It’s tempting to draw conclusions about the kinds of writing styles that lead to viral articles, but the reality is much of this process is random and outside our control.

The only thing we can do is give ourselves more chances to go viral by writing more articles.

I wish I had something better to say. I get fatigued by writing article after article like everyone else. But for now, the thing to do when you’re not seeing the success you want is try, try again.
